Natural Ways to Whiten Teeth
In order to understand the different natural ways to whiten teeth, it’s important to understand why they yellow in the first place.
Various factors go into the yellowing of teeth, including genetics, what you eat and drink, and oral hygiene.
A single tooth is made up of different layers of dentin and enamel. The dentin is the core of the tooth and has a yellow color. The enamel, or the protective covering on the tooth, is the layer that has the more desirable white hue.

At its thickest, enamel can be extremely white. But if this is the case, then why are our teeth even yellowing at all?
When we go through our day doing the simplest of tasks, we are slowly wearing down at our enamel.
This causes the yellowing effect that we are all so very aware of.
You Are What You Eat!
Anything from chewing gum to having that afternoon drink can contribute to the yellowing process. What you eat and drink is extremely indicative of how quickly or how slowly our teeth yellow.
Many different foods and drinks are highly linked to teeth staining and yellowing.
For instance, brightly colored fruits and vegetables, as well as darkly colored wines and fruit juices cause significant staining and ultimately lead to yellowing. So what can we do about it?
Cosmetically speaking, there are many different ways of whitening your teeth, but so many of these methods can be unhealthy and expensive. Not only that, but these procedures can also be time consuming and painful.
Laser teeth whitening (a very popular cosmetic procedure) can cost upwards of five hundred dollars! And that’s just per session. Many of these procedures require multiple sessions of expensive treatments.
So the big question is: are there any natural and inexpensive ways to whiten my teeth?
The answer is yes! There are many different ways to get that brighter and whiter smile that are natural, easy, and inexpensive.
Natural Teeth Whitening Concoctions
Baking Soda and Lemon Juice Paste
While baking soda shouldn’t surprise you as a natural teeth whitening agent, the added lemon juice provides some natural bleaching.
The baking soda, also known as sodium bicarbonate, aids in scrubbing away the surface stains that coat the enamel on your teeth.
Because sodium bicarbonate is naturally abrasive, it very effectively scrubs any acids right off of your teeth.
Baking soda is also very basic in pH, which helps to balance out the acidity of your mouth and the lemon juice also used in the paste.
The best way to fully utilize this natural teeth whitening paste is to take several teaspoons of baking soda and add just enough lemon juice to make a paste.
Then all that’s left to do is to clean the existing saliva from your teeth using a paper towel, and apply the paste to your teeth using your regular toothbrush.
You should leave it on for about a minute to allow the paste to have its full effect, but make sure to rinse thoroughly after that amount of time so that the acid in the lemon juice doesn’t affect the enamel of your teeth.
This concoction is one of the best natural ways to whiten teeth.
Strawberry, Salt, and Baking Soda Scrub
Another great natural remedy for those yellow teeth is a scrub made up of strawberries, salt and baking soda.
Salt, along with baking soda, acts as the scrubbing agent in this formula, helping to eliminate those difficult stains.
The strawberries in this scrub contain Vitamin C, which is known to break down the plaque that can be causing your teeth to turn yellow.
Not only that, but strawberries are also high in malic acid, which further helps to scrub away stains from all the acids that come into contact with your teeth on a daily basis.
To maximize the benefits of this scrub, simply smash some strawberries into a paste-like texture, add a pinch or two of salt, and a little bit of baking soda.
Once the ingredients are well stirred and have created a paste, simply wipe your teeth clean of saliva, put some of the scrub onto your toothbrush, and apply throughout your mouth, making sure all your teeth are covered.
Leave this natural way to whiten teeth on for about five minutes, and rinse.
Coconut Oil Rinse
I know this sounds crazy, but coconut oil makes a fantastic mouthwash when it comes to natural teeth whitening.
Coconut oil apparently contains lauric acid, which helps to eradicate the plaque from your teeth, revealing the healthy white enamel underneath.
Also known as “oil pulling,” rinsing your mouth with coconut oil not only helps to whiten your teeth, but it also freshens your breath and can lead to longer term benefits in oral hygiene.
I would recommend this remedy if you are particularly fond of the taste of coconut.
In addition to being a more natural and cost-effective remedy, “oil pulling” is also extremely easy.
Put a tablespoon or so of the oil into your mouth and swirl it around for fifteen to twenty minutes. Once you have very thoroughly covered all areas of your mouth, simply spit out the oil and brush your teeth normally.
Not only will this remedy repair and whiten your teeth, but it will also improve your overall oral health.

Natural Teeth Whitening Good Habit
Water Rinse
One way to effectively whiten your teeth is to prevent them from yellowing in the first place.
A simple rinse of water after eating or drinking can remove damaging bacteria from your teeth before it creates the plaque that can cause yellowing.
A swirl of water can also remove any of the remaining acids or staining agents from the surfaces of your teeth.
There are many different foods that have staining agents and are bad for your teeth and their yellow coloring.
Many popular foods such as brightly colored fruits and vegetables can cause the staining and yellowing that no one wants. Just remember to take a big sip of water after meals and swish it around in your mouth. It can make a huge difference when it comes to natural teeth whitening.
