While we think you probably got here to find a great toothpaste without fluoride, we really recommend you don’t stop here if your drinking water is polluted with fluoride.

Tom’s of Maine Natural Antiplaque Tartar Control & Whitening Toothpaste

This Tom’s of Maine toothpaste is not only fluoride free, it also includes something called silica that provide some teeth whitening capabilities.

One controversial ingredient in this toothpaste is SLS, or Sodium lauryl sulfate.  We would typically avoid recommending a product with SLS.

However, Tom’s of Maine has done quite a bit of research into this (you can read here).

Most of the issues associated with SLS have to do with leaving it on your skin and it becoming a skin irritant.  This article discusses SLS in general and mentions the skin issues.

From what we have found, the SLS amounts are limited.  And, since you won’t be leaving it on your skin, Tom’s assures us that it isn’t a problem.

A very high percentage of the reviews we found on this product agree that this toothpaste is not only safe, but is great at keeping your breath fresh.

Himalaya Herbal Healthcare Neem & Pomegranate Toothpaste

If Fluoride isn’t your only concern, and you’re not comfortable with Sodium lauryl sulfate, then Neem makes this toothpaste that doesn’t have fluoride, SLS, gluton, or Saccharin.

Neem also ensures that no animal testing is performed in the manufacturing of this product.

Of the reviews we found, over 81% gave this toothpaste a perfect score.  Many of the reviewers had searched long and far for a toothpaste without all of the “bad” ingredients listed above, but had never found one that didn’t taste like sidewalk tar.

Many commented on how the taste of this toothpaste was “unique”.  Some thought the taste was strange at first, but then grew (quickly) to really enjoy the flavor.

Xyliwhite Baking Soda Toothpaste

Xyliwhite is another toothpaste we found that has a fine list of “doesn’t haves”:

• No Fluoride
• No Sodium Lauryl Sulfate
• No Gluten
• No Parabens

This toothpaste also is a whitening toothpaste.  So, a great feature in a product that is built to be “healthy”.

What Kind of Water Filter is Best?

Now that we know that we have this poison in our water, how can we remove it?  The easiest answer is a water filter.

However, not all water filter types remove fluoride.  Here are the types of water filters you should be looking for:

• Reverse osmosis
• Deionizers (with ion-exchange resins)
• Activated alumina

So, let’s look at the best of the best for each of these types of water filters.

Reverse osmosis

If you are looking to protect your family or yourself, this is the best product you can choose.

Reverse osmosis is a procedure whereby the water is pressurized through a membrane that is so fine that it filters out only the purest water.

The result removes larger molecules and ions, and allows only the smaller H2O molecules to pass through.

This is simply the best product you can buy for filtering fluoride.  It is sophisticated enough to perform the complicated reverse osmosis reaction in its purest form.

While the price may seem steep, what might the price be if you or your family end up at the doctor with any of those issues listed above.

Deionizers

Our research found that deionizers can also do a fine job of cleansing your drinking water of dangerous contaminants.

Activated alumina

We found several activated alumina filters while researching this topic.

Unfortunately, the activated alumina filters we found only reduced fluoride content.  It didn’t completely remove fluoride.

The prices for those filters was more reasonable.  However, we felt they just didn’t do the job well enough to recommend any of them.
